About Mrs.Bum

Crazy name, right? It all started many years ago when my husband Roy began sharing his beautiful beach photography as theOBXBeachBum. It didn’t take long before some of his fans, swept up in the artistry of the Outer Banks beaches, asked him…

“Is there a Mrs. Bum?”

And so Roy made it official.

Each morning, when Roy focuses his cameras on the beachscapes that catch his eye, I’ll walk off in my own direction keeping an eye out for plastic and other litter in the sand. It saddens me to find so much trash that can sicken birds, fish and other wildlife when it’s ingested or if they become ensnared in it.

I’m also on the lookout for treasure. Small shells, wampum, seaglass, driftwood, anything I could add to my shell garden or jewelry I had started making.

On occasion, when we’d met up after our beach walk, Roy would share his own shell find and ask if I could make him a necklace. It wasn’t long before Mrs.Bum’s Beach Friendly Jewelry made its debut at one of the craft fairs where we were selling our photography, and it went really well. I had a new venture.

It is important to me to make my jewelry out of earth friendly, plastic-free materials. So, I use natural cotton, bamboo and hemp cording that is strong, bio-degradable and UV-resistant. My beads are made from recycled glass, and the shells I have found right here on the beaches of the OBX.
